VCF Annual Conference 1959 where FES was first proposedIn 1959, a strong nationalistic spirit was sweeping the country. Students, restless for action, were seeking guidance. In the church, liberal theology was widespread.

Meanwhile, God was quietly at work, gathering students in different campuses for prayer and Bible study. Eager to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, these students formed Christian Fellowships in their respective places of learning.

Eventually, the need for a national body to be formed to encourage and support the work across the different campuses was evident. In July 1959, the FES was launched.

With the growth and development of ministry amongst Chinese-speaking and Indonesian-speaking students, the Chinese Work (CW) Commitee and the Indonesian Ministry (IM) were set up in 1970 and 2003 respectively to better coordinate the work in these sections.
