Reading the Bible Wisely

Date: Tuesday, 22 September 2015
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Venue: Church of the Good Shepherd, 2 Dundee Road, Queenstown

How can we become people who read the Bible well? Despite many important insights into methods and techniques for studying Scripture, one of the key components of the hermeneutical puzle of reading the Bible well today is the importance of Christain character in the reader. Unsurprisingly, Scripture models this in various ways. Often our discussion of hermeneutics overlook this, or add on questionsof character as an after-thought to good method or technical study. In this session, we explore how character is central to reading the Bible wisely.

One-Day Intensive Course with Dr Richard Briggs

The Old Testament in Christian Ministry

Date: Thursday, 24 September 2015
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Venue: FES Conference Room #05-06 North Bridge Centre

Course Description:
The Old Testament offers rich resources for Christian ministers today, and arguably we cannot really understand the New Testament without reference to it. The best way to access these resources is through careful and patient attention to specific texts. In this course, we will take four key passages and probe how the Old Testament speaks across the centuries. In many significant ways, the world the Old Testament addresses is exactly the same as our world. There are cultural and historical differences, but when we reach the level of humanity before God: the Old Testament describes the “real world” of divine-human encounter, and speaks as much to us as to any readers down through the centuries.

Our chosen texts explore various characterisations of human life, showing how light still shines in the darkness, and the God of the Old Testament is the same God as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
